Tympanoplasty is a highly specialized microsurgical procedure performed to reconstruct a perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane) and, if necessary, repair the small hearing bones (ossicles) of the middle ear. The primary goals are to prevent recurrent infections and restore hearing functions.
Dr. Rohit Agerwal performs tympanoplasty using high-resolution surgical microscopes or specialized endoscopes. A small graft of tissue (usually harvested from the patient's own ear cartilage or muscle fascia) is placed underneath the eardrum perforation to serve as a bridge for the eardrum to heal.
The ear is packed with medical sponges to hold the graft in place. Keep the ear completely dry; avoid heavy lifting or straining.
The clinical packing is removed in-office. Temporary popping or bubbling sounds are standard as the ear begins to heal.
A follow-up hearing test (audiometry) is conducted to verify eardrum healing and measure hearing improvement.
