Hearing Loss & Audiometry

Overview of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a common sensory challenge that impacts communication, social interaction, and overall quality of life. It can occur gradually due to aging (presbycusis), noise exposure, genetic factors, or suddenly due to trauma, fluid accumulation, or ear-bone rigidity (otosclerosis).

Hearing Loss & Audiometry Diagnostics

Types of Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss

Caused by obstructions in the outer or middle ear (such as fluid, wax, or ear-drum perforations), preventing sound from reaching the inner ear.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Occurs due to damage within the inner ear hair cells (cochlea) or the auditory nerve. Frequently managed with modern hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Diagnostic Phase: Pure Tone Audiometry

Dr. Rohit Agerwal utilizes a specialized soundproof acoustics cabin to perform high-resolution Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA). By playing tones at varying frequencies and volumes through calibrated headphones, we map your precise hearing threshold (audiogram) to identify the specific nature of hearing deficits.

Treatment Procedures

  • Tympanoplasty & Myringotomy

Reconstruction of punctured eardrums to restore sound conduction and eliminate chronic middle-ear discharge.

  • Cochlear Implantation

A surgically implanted electronic device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear to stimulate the auditory nerve directly.

What to Expect: Cochlear Recovery Timeline

Day 1 - 3: Immediate Surgical Rest

Hospital discharge is usually scheduled within 24 hours. Keep the surgical site clean and dry; mild discomfort is controlled via prescribed medication.

Week 3 - 4: Device Activation

Once incision healing is confirmed, our audiologists program and activate the external processor, marking the first hearing experience.

Months 1 - 6: Auditory Rehabilitation

Engage in structured listening sessions with speech therapists to maximize sound comprehension and speech clarity.
