Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious sleep disorder where throat muscles temporarily relax, causing recurrent collapses and airway blockage during sleep. This leads to loud snoring, breathing pauses (apnea), fragmented sleep cycles, and severe daytime exhaustion.
Diagnosis involves detailed nocturnal polysomnography (Sleep Study). If non-invasive measures like CPAP masks are not tolerated, Dr. Rohit Agerwal performs surgical widening of the airway. This includes Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or minimally invasive coblation-assisted palatal shifts to prevent collapse.
Hospital stay is usually 1 day. Focus on soft, cold foods and maintain hydration.
Expect mild sore throat. Follow prescribed liquid diets and avoid strenuous throat activity.
Airway swelling subsides. Normal swallowing returns, snoring resolves, and sleep quality improves.
